Passion project: Katie Holmes says she 'loved' playing Jackie Kennedy in a TV series that has since been axed by the History Channel

Katie Holmes says she 'worked hard' to accurately portray Jackie Kennedy in a new TV miniseries, but it wasn't enough to prevent it from being dropped by the History Channel.

The eight part film, which stars Katie Holmes as the First Lady and Greg Kinnear as JFK, was set to air in the US later this year.

But it is unlikely to ever be shown in the U.S. after pressure from his surviving family members.

Maria Shriver and Caroline Kennedy are reported to have lobbied hard for the History Channel to pull the plug on the series.

In an interview with Elle magazine that took place before the show was axed, the former Dawson's Creek actress said she immersed herself in research, reading books and watching old footage of the former US First Lady.

'[Tom] watched everything with me,' Holmes says of her 48-year-old husband Tom Cruise. 'He found it fascinating.'

The mother-of-one reportedly tells Elle magazine that she spent her evenings practicing Kennedy's accent.

'I worked as hard as I could,' she says, 'because I loved her.

'On set there was this feeling that we had to create something very special, because these people were very special.'

In Elle, she spoke in depth about her fascination with the former First Lady who was at her husband's side when he was assassinated in November 1963.

Holmes says she didn't realise that Kennedy's two-day-old son Patrick died in August, three months before her husband was shot to death.

That loss was in addition to a miscarriage she suffered in the first year of her marriage and the birth of a stillborn daughter in 1956.
She eventually had two healthy children - Caroline and John F Kennedy JR.
'I didn't realise that she had lost a child in August,' Holmes says, 'and then [Jack] was assassinated in November.

'I couldn't believe it. She had so much strength... I loved her love of family, how important it was for her to be a good mother.'

Holmes also says: '[The Kennedys] were like movie stars. There was such a professionalism to their public image.'

At the weekend the History Channel made its shock announcement in an exclusive statement given to The Hollywood Reporter.

A spokesperson from the station told the entertainment bible: 'While the film is produced and acted with the highest quality, after viewing the final product in its totality we have concluded this dramatic interpretation is not a fit for the History brand...

The Kennedys is still scheduled to air on Canadian TV in March.
