She also has the more delicate features compared to the other Smurfs, with her pretty long blonde wavy hair and long eyelashes.

The plot sees Gargamel chasing the Smurfs out of their magical village and into Central Park.

He is accompanied by his ginger tom cat Azrael.

In the film, the dolls are bought to life in post-production thanks to computer-generated imagery.

The hybrid animation – a technique which mixes real actors and computer generated characters – has been in negotiations for five years.

The Smurfs have been a firm favourite with children ever since they were first created in 1958 by cartoonist Pierre Culliford.

And while Katy may be playing Smurfette, she admits that she wasn't a childhood fan of the 80s TV show.

'I've never seen an episode because my parents wouldn't let me,' she said last year.
'My mom thought that Smurfette was a little bit slutty, being the only female in the village.'

'And now I showed her. I called her up and was like, 'Guess what, Mom: I'm Smurfette!'.

Filming began last year in New York City and is expected to be released this August.
