One minute she's doing a Diana, the next she's a Luftwaffe pilot: How Cheryl Cole's designer outfits speak louder than her words

Avenging Luftwaffe pilot: Cheryl saved her best outfit for last when she returned from L.A.

Cheryl Cole is the picture of dejection: Bambi eyes shielded by giant sunglasses, glossy hair in an austere ponytail.

But she is no victim.

For ten days, she's been fighting a focused popularity campaign - all without saying a word.

Nothing Cheryl does is guileless. Every appearance and accessory is faultlessly stage-managed.

She's graduated from wedding ring Morse code - whipping off the gobstopper- sized sparkler to signal marital difficulties - to sending more specific messages through her designer outfits.

At the Brit Awards, just after revelations of Ashley's sex-texting emerged, she performed a hard-faced, show-stopping version of her song Fight For This Love.

She was dressed as a sex-worker's idea of a private detective and then as a glamorous Asbo hoodie in a spangly black leotard.

Both said: 'Don't mess with me.'

Then she flew to Los Angeles in a Beatrice Boyle T-shirt featuring a weeping woman and toting a £1,000 Christian Louboutin bag that looked more like a medieval torture weapon.

This time the message was: 'I'm crying inside, but I'm a fighter.'

For her arrival in LA, Cheryl changed into a £855 Acne cardigan in dove grey, a colour that whispers: 'Don't hurt me.'

Once news broke of Ashley's alleged other infidelities, she was snapped in a £1,300 draped Chapurin black dress that stopped just below her knickers.

It instantly inspired memories of the traffic-stopping black dress worn by Princess Diana on the day Charles admitted his infidelity on TV.

Later in the week, she wore giant 'hide the tears' sunglasses with a soft Wildfox pink T-shirt with a red heart over her own, bearing the message: 'I left my heart in Beverly Hills.'

She might just as well have said: 'I'm still a romantic, even though the love of my life has destroyed me.'

Two days later, she was in a chic Alexander McQueen diffusion shift dress, channelling Jackie Onassis - another wronged, elegant woman, adored by the public, but betrayed by her playboy husband.

Cheryl saved the best outfit for last. Arriving back in Britain, she emerged from the plane dressed like an avenging Luftwaffe pilot.

She was trussed into a £995 black leather jacket by Burberry, with tourniquet black J Brand jeans, black Chanel nail polish and still hauling the bag that looks like a nail-bomb.

We certainly didn't need the official statement the next day to tell us the couple were separating.

If the next time she appears in public she's wearing a business suit, make no mistake - she's begun divorce proceedings.
