Swift was up for Female Video of the Year, Collaborative Video of the Year (with Kellie Pickler), and Video of the Year, but it was Underwood who scooped up the coveted Video of the Year award, along with the CMT Performance of the Year award.

As well as a huge celebrity turn out and amazing musical performances there was plenty of light relief during the show. Saturday Night Live's Kenan Thompson turned up on stage in a red wig and green dress, proclaiming: 'I'm Reba!' Referencing a SNL skit featuring the comedian and fellow cast member Andy Samberg.
There were serious moments too though, as when Keith Urban took to the stage, commenting about troubles facing residents of the Gulf Coast following the aftermath of the BP oil spill.
'In the midst of all this tonight, I want to send my deepest love and prayers out to the families of the Gulf Coast who are going through an insane time right now,' he said whilst accepting his award.
'We've never seen anything like it, emotions I can't even find words for while I watch this happening on TV.'
Kid Rock closed the show with an observation on the power of music, 'As a music lover, if it looks good you'll see it,' he said. 'If it sounds good you'll hear it.
If it's marketed right you'll buy it. But if it's real you'll feel it.'
