British soldier serving in Afghanistan for Christmas proposes to girlfriend live on television

Romance: Colleen Brady, 30, wipes away tears after boyfriend Warrant Officer Nick Walker proposed live on air on GMTV this morning

A British soldier in Afghanistan surprised his girlfriend in the UK today by proposing live on television.

Warrant Officer Second Class Nick Walker, 35, used a satellite link to pop the question to Colleen Brady, who was sitting on the sofa in the GMTV studio.

Speaking from Camp Bastion in Helmand province, WO2 Walker went down on one knee and said: 'Colleen, I'm sorry I can't be with you this Christmas, but I want to try and make it as special as I can since I'm away over in Afghanistan.

'We've been together now for five years and I love you so, so much. And to show my love for you, this is what I want to do.

'Colleen, you're the best thing that's ever happened to me. Will you marry me?'
Miss Brady, a 30-year-old nurse who lives with WO2 Walker in Hereford, choked back tears and said: 'Of course I will.

'I'm just so happy, I love you so much, I really do.'

Miss Brady was joined in the studio by WO2 Walker's mother, Tina Walker, 52, also from Hereford.

The women had no idea the Army Physical Training Corps officer, who is originally from Mansfield, was going to propose and thought he was just appearing to say hello.

Shock: WO Walker was intending to wait until he returned from Afghanistan, but jumped at the chance to propose live on air

WO2 Walker had intended to wait until he came back to the UK at the end of the tour to ask the big question.

But he jumped at the chance to do it live on air, telling his new fiancee: 'Colleen, I love you so much and I can't wait to be with you.

'I look forward to seeing you. I miss my family, and Mum, I love you too.'
ITV is broadcasting a Far From Home strand over Christmas with special reports from Afghanistan and messages home from the troops.
