Iron Man 2: It's all white on the night as Scarlett Johansson and Gwyneth Paltrow go head-to-head on red carpet

They may have sported very different styles on the red carpet last night, but Iron Man 2 co-star Scarlett Johansson and Gwyneth Paltrow opted for the same colour as they attended the film's world premiere.

Just days after they both wore grey to a photocall, Johansson and Paltrow wore white as they joined their co-star Robert Downey Jnr at the star-studded screening in Los Angeles.

While Johansson, 25, opted for a stunning sculpted Armani Prive asymmetrical dress and glittery heels, Paltrow, 37, went for a more androgynous look in a pair of Giorgio Armani degrade shorts and matching blazer.

Unsurprisingly, neither women brought their famous spouses. Both Johansson and Paltrow are incredibly private about their marriages to Ryan Reynolds and Chris Martin respectively.

While Paltrow is reprising her role as Pepper Potts for the second time, Johasson is a new addition to the cast as Russian secret agent Natalia Romanova, aka The Black Widow.

For the role, the Lost In Translation star got in shape to squeeze into a skin-tight catsuit.

Speaking about her and Paltrow's roles yesterday, she said: 'These characters are strong, independent women that could function with or without the men in their lives. They run a smooth, efficient operation and are at the head of their game and I really attribute that to (director) Jon Favreau’s appreciation for a strong lady.

'It’s very exciting to be that kind of role model for young girls and for women to see that you don’t have to be the damsel in distress. You can actually kick some a** and look fabulous doing it.'

The world premiere was originally due to take place in London, but the decision was taken last week to move it to LA due to the flight disruption caused by the Icelandic volcano eruption.

On Friday night, talk show host Jonathan Ross ended up conducting interviews with Paltrow and Downey Jnr via satellite because they couldn't get to London in time.

The pair were joined by co-stars Mickey Rourke, Samuel L Jackson, Don Cheadle, Sam Rockwell, Garry Shandling and Leslie Bibb.

Rourke arrived with his latest girlfriend Anastassija Makarenko, while fellow Eighties film icon Sylvester Stallone brought his stunning wife Jennifer Flavin.

Johansson and Paltrow declined to pose together on the red carpet last night, no doubt fuelling months of speculation they didn't get on during filming.

Paltrow was missing from the promotional posters from Iron Man 2, while Johansson - dressed in a leather catsuit as the Black Widow - did feature in the images.

However, Paltrow's representative insisted she was 'not at all upset' about being missing from the posters.

Playing down reports of a rivalry, Johansson said: 'I was so lucky because I had Gwyneth to counterbalance all that testosterone. It certainly was a bit of a boys’ club.

'Luckily I am entertained by all of that. I think that for the guys this movie was their playground, they had all of the big toys and all of the big action sequences.

'Luckily I exuded enough femininity to kind of quieten them down a little bit.'

Meanwhile, at the London premiere...

The guest list was expected to include A-listers Downey Jnr, Paltrow and Johansson.

But after the Icelandic volcanic eruption moved the world premiere of Iron Man 2 from London to Los Angeles, last night's screening in the capital wasn't quite such a starry affair.

While celebrities donned their finest designer couture on the red carpet of Hollywood's El Capitan Theatre, the London screening wasn't quite so glamorous.

Leading the glamour stakes at the Westfield screening was T4 presenter Jameela Jamil in a thigh-skimming silver dress and high heels.

She was joined by Celebrity Big Brother winner Alex Reid, who arrived without his wife Katie Price.

Unsurprisingly, the action film attracted mainly male celebrities, with Slumdog Millionaire actor Dev Patel, rapper Dizzee Rascal and comedian Leigh Francis in attendance.

Fresh from running the London Marathon the day before, TV presenter Jenni Falconer enjoyed a date night with actor fiancé James Midgely.
