Toddling through the tulips: Two-year-old enjoys the English countryside in stunning flower field

By David Derbyshire

No place like home: Two-year-old Isabella Ward grins as she holds some colourful tulips while walking through a Norfolk field

It looks like a scene from the flower fields of Holland.

But little Isabella Ward, two, is actually tiptoeing through the tulips in the English countryside.

Her family's fields in Norfolk were a stunning kaleidoscope of colours yesterday.

Sadly these 87 acres are thought to be the last remaining tulip bulbfields in Britain.

At the start of the 20th century, more than 3,000 acres of the flowers were grown in Norfolk and Lincolnshire, but most producers switched to more profitable vegetable and cereal crops

However, Isabella's grandparents Janet and Peter Ward, who run Belmont Nurseries, decided to go into the tulip business ten years ago and now supply 15million stems to supermarkets each year.

'Our colourful tulip fields do cause quite a stir, particularly as the land around them is used to grow carrots,' said Mrs Ward.
