Puppy love: Jennifer Lopez and co-star Nubbins the dog hit the red carpet for the LA premiere of The Back-Up Plan

Diva extraordinaire Jennifer Lopez doesn't usually like to share the spotlight, but she made an exception last night for her latest big screen co-star.

The singer and actress was happy to be upstaged on the Hollywood red carpet by Nubbins the dog, who appears alongside her in the new rom com, The Back-Up Plan.

The 39-year-old, who was dressed in a striking one-shoulder Gianfranco Ferré frock, posed with the adorable Boston Terrier before later being joined by her husband Marc Anthony.

In the upcoming film, Jennifer plays a a single woman determined to become a mother who meets a love interest on the same day as she falls pregnant through artificial insemination.

In the meantime, inspired by her beloved dog Nuts, she decides to set up Hudson Mutts, a pet boutique which caters to pet adoptions and environmentally-conscious pet care.

'Even though Nuts is handicapped, Zoe treats him like he’s normal,' Lopez says.

'She’s tough on him and she loves him. She’s always there for him.'

Good chemistry: The Boston Terrier plays a special needs dog named Nuts who belongs to Jennifer's character Zoe

A dog's life: Nubbins is an able-bodied dog in real life but was made to stay in character on the red carpet (and doesn't he look thrilled)
In real life, the Nubbins is able-bodied but was made to stay in character for his promotional appearance last night.

Nubbins and two other rescued dogs - Nip and Tuck - were used to portray Nuts, who is described as charismatic, special needs canine.

'One was good at faces, one was good at walking in the chair, and one was good at moving his head and fighting with you,' she added.

'They were all very talented. It was fun. Sometimes you just have to wait until they get it, but it was challenging.'

On sparkling form: The 42-year-old mother of twins looked toned and terrific in a one-shoulder Gianfranco Ferré dress

Night off parent duty: Jennifer and husband Marc Anthony made the most of an evening away from twins Emme and Max

Director Alan Poul revealed: 'In order to train the dogs to do all they had to do, we had to go with completely healthy dogs.'

The animals, who were coached over a number of weeks by Marley & Me trainer April Macklin, are experienced Hollywood performers having all appeared in the 2009 flick Hotel for Dogs.

And according to Poul, the canine character steals the show - just don't tell Ms Lopez.

He said: 'Nuts provides a lot of comedy in the film. He has a big role - he’s one of the go-to characters for funny!'

The Back-Up Plan is released in the UK next month.
